How to Make the Most of Your Thermostat Settings

A thermostat puts you in complete control of your heating, so it’s important that you know how to utilize it to your advantage. At Bienvenu Brothers, we’ve put together tips on how to get the most from your thermostat.

Reset Your Thermostat

It literally could not be easier to save money on your heating or air conditioning bills. By simply resetting your thermostat when you are out and about or asleep, you can save heaps of money! By installing an automatic programmable thermostat, you can do this automatically without having to worry. A programmable thermostat allows you to adjust the times you turn the heating or air-conditioning on, according to a pre-set schedule.

Know What Temperatures to Set

To save money in winter, you should set your thermostat at around 68°F while you’re in the house, and set it lower while you’re asleep or not at home. If you turn your thermostat to 10° to 15° for 8 hours, you can potentially save 5% to 15% a year on your bills.
During the summer months, you can follow the same strategy with your central air conditioning system by keeping your house warmer than normal when you are away, and setting the thermostat to around 78°F when you are at home and need to cool down. Although thermostats can be adjusted manually, a programmable thermostat will avoid any unnecessary annoyance by returning the temperature back to normal before you wake up or return home.

How to Choose Your Thermostat

The majority of programmable thermostats are digital, electromechanical, or some mixture of both. Digital thermostats are the most common and offer the most features when it comes to multiple time settings, overrides, and adjustments for daylight and nighttime savings time. However, they can be difficult to program. To find out more about what thermostat would suit you, contact us at (504) 835-7783.
